Explore the world of 3D Contemporary Hand Beading, where intricate stitch techniques bring needlework to life, creating raised, lifelike designs that emerge from the fabric. In this unit, you'll delve into the contemporary combination of padding, layering, and layered beading, transforming a flat surface into a textured, sculptural piece inspired by an 'Under the Sea' brief.
You'll learn how to push the boundaries using materials like metal, silk, and wire to create designs inspired by the brief. Drawing inspiration from traditional Hand Beading and Goldwork embroidery, this unit reimagines ancient techniques in a stunning contemporary context. With the guidance of our expert tutors, you'll master the art of replicating 3D sculpture and form using threads, crystals, beads, and bullions, exploring a diverse array of technical studies.
Please note: for the Autumn dates for this course, the unit is an 11 week unit as there is a one week break on 18th September as our tutor is teaching a one week course in the Alps and will not be available.
Entry Requirements: No formal qualifications are required for joining the course, but those who have never embroidered before are encouraged to attend at least one Hand & Lock online course first.
Each of our Diploma units has a bespoke design brief to help you begin to craft your design ideas. *Disclaimer: The amount of inspiration you take from the brief is up to you, the brief is designed as a guide to assist you in starting the design process and can be taken in any direction you desire as long as it is explained.
Embark on a journey into the depths of the ocean with the ‘Under the Sea’ project inspired by the wonders of the underwater world. Participants are invited to immerse themselves in the enchanting realm of aquatic sanctuaries. This thematic exploration encourages artisans to create and stitch designs that draw inspiration from the structural beauty of marine habitats and the diverse life found within.
At the heart of this design brief lies the opportunity to unleash your creativity, allowing for the creation of unique and personalised expressions within the realm of textile art and sculptural embroidery. Participants are encouraged to delve into the distinctive visual elements of underwater ecosystems, drawing inspiration from the graceful movements of sea creatures, the intricate patterns of coral reefs, and the vibrant palette of marine life.
The design process should commence with a thoughtful exploration of the chosen elements from the "Under the Sea" theme. Consider incorporating motifs reminiscent of swirling seagrass, the intricate textures of coral formations, or the iridescent scales of tropical fish, capturing the essence of their natural beauty. Sculptural embroidery techniques should play a significant role in shaping the textile art narrative, allowing for the creation of three-dimensional elements that echo the organic forms of marine life.
The colour palette for this textile art and sculptural embroidery piece should mirror the hues prevalent in the underwater world, from the rich blues of the ocean depths to the vibrant greens and oranges of coral reefs. Participants are encouraged to experiment with an array of material colours that evoke the dynamic essence of these aquatic environments. Explore different thread shades to accurately represent the intricate patterns and vibrant colours of sea creatures, and utilise metal thread and textured silk work to craft the bodies of fish and other marine inhabitants.

Our tutors will guide you through the design process from creating moodboards and researching your designs to creating your final stitch and padding plans. No prior design or drawing experience is required for the course.

Assessment of work is completely optional, students will be awarded with a Certificate of Completion if they choose not to submit their work for marking and a Certificate of Achievement if they do. The Certificate of Achievement will detail the level achieved through the assessment process. There are three submission points. The first two submissions occur as you are completing each unit to provide you with detailed feedback as you work through the unit to give you a clear direction and understanding of improvements and developments.
