5 Day Silk Flower Making with Anne Tomlin

Over the five days Anne will show you how to make a variety of  lifelike botanicals using a range of silk fabrics and air dried clay.  You’ll learn skills from preparation and stiffening of fabric,  painting with dyes and shaping petals using heated tools,  both French and Japanese. She will share her techniques and  range of methods to create beautiful flowers. You’ll learn how to  create different petals forms, binding stems, leaves, hiding wires,  and making your own pollen and stamens. 

You will leave with a selection of finished flowers and the  confidence and skills to create your own flowers at home.

During this 5 day class you will learn the art of creating silk flowers, starting with creating colour by mixing dyes, stiffening silk and painting with dyes. You will also learn how to use heat tools and moulding with clay. All to make gorgeous realistic silk flowers. Constructing the different elements to create your own flowers.

All of the materials you need for this class will be provided for you as part of your course experience. You are more than welcome to bring your own embroidery equipment if you would rather use your own materials but everything will be provided for you.

Accessibility

Our in person classes are taught in our school which is located upstairs in our studio. Unfortunately the building does not have lift access, so use of the stairs would be necessary.

Tutor Profiles

Anne has a first-class degree in Textiles from UCA Farnham. She then studied Millinery at The London College of Fashion. After making hats for many of the world's prestigious stores, including Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Liberty, and Saks 5th Ave, she moved to West Sussex with her husband and dogs. She now makes bespoke flowers to order, working with milliner Jane Taylor and artist Yinka Shonibare, running short courses at West Dean College and continuing her quest to raise awareness of the natural world in her complex detailed studies of flowers and conservation of wild meadows, so evident in her work.

Her first book, Making Silk Flowers, was published in November 2023.

Before ordering your online class please be aware of the following,

- Use an email address at checkout that you wish to be contacted on

- Make sure your Shipping address is correct for where you want your course kit sent

- Do not place orders to PO Boxes or Military addresses
