Alice is a Digital Embroidery Designer at Hand & Lock,. She studied Fashion Textiles: Embroidery at London College of fashion and joined Hand & Locks machine embroidery department in 2022. At university Alice learnt and developed skills in all areas of embroidery, but found a passion for surface decorations, experimental and innovation through digital embroidery design. 

After graduating from university with honours in 2021, Alice then went on to work for The London Embroidery Studio and designer JW Anderson. Developing an array of skills, techniques and knowledge she brings into all projects and client work . 

Since joining Hand & Lock, Alice has worked with many high profile clients with her expertise and eye for detail including projects for Burberry, Barbour & Phoebe Philo. At Hand & Lock Alice enjoys working on experimental, creative embroidery designs that challenge the norms of classic machine embroidery. 

Project case study: Octavia Austin Wedding Dress Design

In the spring of 2023, Alice worked on an intricately designed, exciting and colourful wedding dress project. Alice interpreted the design given by dress designer Octavia Austin and translated it into stitch. The embroidered skirt panel was 75cm x 55cm, and included 21 different cones of thread. Alice worked closely alongside the designer, experimenting with various techniques and thread qualities to make memorable and important dress for the bride. This one of a kind wedding dress was stitched onto Indian Silk Dupion, and included threads twisted with pure silver for a refined and opulent finish. The design included various motifs including a hummingbird, peacock, parakeet and lots of pomegranates. All motifs there are personal to the bride and groom.
