FAQ - In Person Classes

Choose from a wide array of in person classes. Our in person classes are an amazing opportunity to learn a new skill at our newly renovated school located in the Hand & Lock studio. The classes will cover the basics, insider tips and practical application, making sure you are fully equipped to go on and apply what you have learned to your future projects and develop your own unique style. If you are learning a new skill for a specific purpose and need a little advice, our teachers will be able to talk to you about how you can best apply what you have learnt to your specific project. Upon successful completion of the class you will receive an official Hand & Lock certificate detailing the new skills mastered.

Who teaches the classes at Hand & Lock?

Our classes are taught by expert hand embroiderers who have worked in the couture industry for brands such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Dior, Valentino, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, YSL, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, Lanvin and Burberry to name a few. All of our teachers are always embroiderers first and teachers second, making them the best people to teach you some new techniques and help you apply it to your work.

If you want to learn more about our artists in residence check out our artist profile's here.

Do I need any prior hand embroidery knowledge before taking a class?

We offer classes for all skill levels with a range of different class lengths to suit your needs. Check the description for the specific course to see the skill level and course length.

What if I can't make it to the class?

Our classes are non refundable but with proper notice we will always try and move you to a different date that is more suitable. We require at least 10 days notice to make suitable arrangements and cannot guarantee the same class will be available.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the class?

We provide all the materials and tools for the classes, but you are welcome to bring any tools you feel comfortable using.

Lunch is not provided so you are more than welcome to bring your own lunch to the class, or you may want to venture out to one of the many cafes and eateries in the area. You will have an hour to eat and relax, and depending on the circumstances you may be able to stay and work over the lunch break if preferred. Tea and Coffee will be provided but you're more than welcome to bring your own mug if you prefer. You won’t struggle to find a good meal around here but if you’d like a little help we have put together a list of a few of our favourites here.

If I need more kit supplies what do I do?

All of the materials included in the kit are available to purchase from Hand & Lock on our website here. Alternatively you could pop into our store after your class, where we can help you pick out any extra supplies you might like for your future projects.

Are the classes accessible for visitors with restricted mobility?

All of our in person classes are taught in our school which is located upstairs in our studio. Unfortunately the building does not have lift access, so use of the stairs would be necessary. We do have a wide range of online classes both live and self paced that are able to be done without access to the studio.

Do you offer bespoke and corporate classes?

We do, depending on your needs and expectations for your bespoke course we have a few options for you.

For one to one or group courses taught out of our Hand & Lock school please see here.

For external or corporate bespoke courses please see here.
